ABOUT US
WKU K1 South Africa is an innovative governing and regulatory body for K1 Kickboxing in South Africa, internationally affiliated to the World Kickboxing Union (WKU) and recognized by the Global Combat Sports Organization (GCO).
Our mission is to grow, uplift, and regulate K1 Kickboxing nationwide through a modern, professional framework that empowers athletes, lowers barriers to participation, and promotes equal opportunity across all levels of the sport.
Through clear standards and structured progression pathways, we support long-term athlete development while advancing the professional growth of coaches and officials.
Fight Night events and championship title bouts are central to our vision, providing a pathway that nurtures talent from grassroots participation to elite professional competition, with a strong emphasis on athlete safety, integrity, and professionalism.
From first-time competitors to international title contenders, WKU K1 South Africa offers a clear and accessible pathway for progression, spanning development formats, structured amateur rankings, Pro-Am competition, and high-level national, intercontinental, and world title fights.
WHAT IS K1?
K1 Kickboxing is a fast-paced combat sport that combines the most effective striking techniques from multiple martial arts into a single, dynamic ruleset.
Originally popularized through the iconic K-1 events in Japan during the 1990s, the K1 ruleset was developed to allow fighters from different striking backgrounds - such as Muay Thai, Karate, Taekwondo, and Kickboxing - to compete on equal terms. Over time, K1 evolved into a distinct global sport, recognized for its balance of power, technique, and entertainment.
WKU K1 SA rules are designed to keep bouts fast-paced and engaging. Fighters are permitted to use punches, kicks, and knee strikes, along with brief clinch exchanges limited to a single knee strike or sweep, and kick-catch techniques that create dynamic counterattacks. This produces an action-packed fighting style that rewards precision, timing, and combat effectiveness.
Through our structured development pathways, beginners can safely compete in Development Modes and progress toward full K1 competition, while experienced athletes advance toward elite competition and international events.

WKU K1 South Africa creates clear local and international opportunities for athletes at every stage of their journey, from novices in the ring to elite-level competitors.
Our structured development pathway allows athletes to build technical skill, conditioning, and mental resilience in a safe and progressive environment before advancing to full K1 competition.
Competitive opportunities are available across all levels, starting with Kids K1 divisions from age 8, delivered under a developmental ruleset aligned with global best practices for athlete safety and long-term participation.
Athletes competing within the WKU K1 SA system have access to national, intercontinental, and world title pathways, as well as opportunities to progress onto international events and global promotions within the WKU framework.
Alongside athlete development, we offer a 4-level coaching pathway designed to equip instructors with the skills needed to develop world-class K1 athletes. We also provide an official WKU K1 curriculum and instructor licensing programme, giving coaches access to internationally recognized gradings and a comprehensive and innovative coaching system technical framework.
